After a few months of writers block I decided to step away from working on the EP, and write a song for my partner instead. Our anniversary was two weeks away, and I was planning to propose to her on that same day, so I gave myself a time limit and ended up finishing it in a few days. At the time, my goal was to write something beautifully romantic, with no intention of releasing it. But when I listen back to it now, I realise just how sad I was, given everything that had happened in my life. It became more of a thank you song, for holding my hand through grief and for loving me through the darkness I’d felt. She sat beside me on days when I didn’t feel human, and she loved me like I was alive. There’s a post-chorus line that repeats, “better get those voices out your mind”. I pitched it down because that voice in my head never sounds like my own voice - it sounds like the voice of depression, trying to convince me that I don’t deserve the lightness that is love. This is probably the darkest love song I’ve ever written, but I’m incredibly proud of it, and the production. Also, she said yes.
