This track is the closure to my debut LP Get Well Soon (2020). I wish I’d written it a year earlier so it could have made it onto that album. It’s about waking up the morning after having your heart broken, versus waking up the year after. It’s about realising that you don’t need to be a hero for a love that hurts. “I loved myself like I was scared to” is about not loving yourself enough while loving someone else. “Didn’t realise I didn’t need you” is realising that your own love is enough, and it’s the most freeing and liberating feeling. It always makes me think of the iconic photos of Nicole Kidman leaving her attorney’s office after finalising her divorce with Tom Cruise. Her arms are thrown back in celebration, and it’s such a raw display of emotion. The only thing greater than being physically free of someone, is knowing that you’re free from the belief that you couldn’t survive without them.
